Spices play a major role in the kitchen. I’m always surprised at what spices do with the recipes, delicious! The taste and smell are the most important, but it also contains vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Turmeric – Do you know what Turmeric does for you?

Turmeric, maybe you already know it and have used it before. But do you know what Turmeric actually does for you? And where does it come from?

This delicious spice comes from Southeast Asia, belongs to the ginger family. In India and China, the root has been cultivated for at least 5000 years as a food and medicine to treat physical ailments. It gives a nutty, mildly bitter taste to dishes. One of the most important seasonings in dishes.

The root looks like ginger

It is available as a fresh rhizome in the store, the root also looks a bit like ginger. The rhizome is dried and ground into a bright yellow powder. Did you know that curry and mustard owe their colours to the use of Turmeric?

What does this spice really do?

In the root and underground trunk of the Turmeric Longa is a medicinal ingredient called Curcumin. This is used in many medicinal applications. Curcumin contains strong antioxidants and reduces inflammation. Black pepper, ginger and Turmeric provide a liver cleansing effect. Turmeric also protects you from toxic components.

The healthy components of Turmeric are best released in combination with black pepper, possibly mixed in olive oil.

Mix your own curry with:

  • Ginger powder
  • Coriander seed
  • Cloves
  • Caraway
  • Turmeric
  • Cumin
  • Black pepper
  • Cardamom

Determine your own quantities of these ingredients

You can crush whole seeds in a mortar. First fry the curry in oil, with garlic and onions. Turmeric is best stored in a good, airtight container in a cool and dark place.

Dissolve a few tablespoons of Turmeric in hot water until it has a firm substance and uses 1 teaspoon every day. Store the rest in a glass dish covered in the refrigerator.

Tip: Don’t buy too much Turmeric at the same time. The taste, colour and aroma then remain intact. Try this delicious spice!!



  • Boil 1 litre of water in a pan
  • Temper the boiled water and add the following ingredients:

* Turmeric

* Ginger

* Black pepper

* Lemon

* Thyme

  • Let all ingredients in the pan simmer for 5 minutes (the water is no longer boiling)
  • Add a tablespoon of honey to a glass teapot (Preferably uses a teapot with a filter)
  • After 5 minutes add the contents of the pan into the filter of the teapot
